GENERALINTRODUCTION

This work, containing annotated descriptions of the collections of Ceylonese MSS belonging to the Royal L ibrary, is volum e I in a proposed series of simi- lar works.

Ca t a l o g u e o f O r ie n t a l Ma n u s c r i p t s, X y l o g r a p h s e t c. in D a n is h Co l l e c

t io n s is the title of a set of works w hich aims at giving a detailed description of the collections of O riental m anuscripts in the Royal L ibrary in Copenhagen and of some O riental m anuscripts in other Danish collections.

The history of the Royal L ib rary ’s Oriental Collection goes back to the founding of the library by King Frederik III (1609-70), who owned a sm all num ber of Oriental m anuscripts, but it was not until Carsten N iebuhr returned from his journey to the East (1761-67) and his m anuscripts were added to the collection

that it attained a considerable size.

In the following decades the library received a num ber of Oriental m anuscripts from private collectors such as C. G. Kratzenstein, Otto Thott, P. F. Suhm, and

D. G. M oldenhawer, and as was the case with most of the collections of Oriental m anuscripts in Europe, the Arabie, Persian and Hebrew m anuscripts were also predom inant in the collections at the Royal Library.

However, the position changed radically after Rasm us Rask, the Danish philologist, brought back very large collections of m anuscripts, especially in Pali and Sinhalese, from his long journey to the East (1816—23).

During his travels in the Orient Rasm us Rask also acquired a unique and rare collection of Avestan m anuscripts, w hich was later increased by N. L. Wester- gaard, another fam ous D anish philologist, who travelled in the East from 1841—44.

The Avestan collection, form erly in the University L ibrary of Copenhagen, w as later transferred to the Royal L ibrary together vrith the rest of this lib rary ’s

Oriental m anuscripts.

During this century the L ib rary ’s Oriental collections have been m uch enlarged. A great num ber of Persian and Arabic m anuscripts have been added to the collections from the Near Orient. The collection of Pali m anuscripts from Ceylon has been supplem ented to a considerable extent with m anuscripts written on palm leaves from other B uddhist countries, e.g. B urm a. Moreover, the Indian collections have been greatly enlarged, partly by acquisition of a few hundred m anuscripts from Nepal in Sanskrit, Nepali and Newari.

(23)

It is also during the present century that the Royal L ib rary ’s Central Asiatic collections have reached a very high standard. This is m ainly due to the collection of Mongolian m anuscripts and block-books m ade by the late Professor Kaare Grønbech while a m em ber of the Second D anish Central Asiatic Expedition (1938-39), and to the extensive collections of Tibetan m anuscripts and block- books w hich H. R. H. Prince Peter of Greece and D enm ark has aquired for the L ibrary since 1951. The T ibetan acquisitions include complete sets of the Lhasa K anjur and the N arthang T anjur.

Of special interest included in the L ib rary ’s other collections of Oriental m anuscripts are the following: 82 Laos m anuscripts written on palm leaves, 14 Chinese scrolls from T un-huang, 10 copper tablets with inscriptions in Old Javanese, 86 B atak m anuscripts from Sum atra and 37 m anuscripts from the Yao tribe in N orthern T hailand.

Ca t a l o g u e o f O r i e n t a l M a n u s c r i p t s, X y l o g r a p h s e t c. in D a n is h Co l l e c

t io n s replaces the O riental catalogue w hich the Royal L ibrary published more than a h u n d red years ago: Co d ic e s O r i e n t a l e s B ib l io t h e c æ R eg iæ H a v n i-

e n s i s, Vols. 1-3, Copenhagen 1846-57. A new catalogue is not only w anted due to the great increase in the Royal L ib rary ’s stock of Oriental m anuscripts during the past h u n d red years, but also because it will meet a request for a description of the L ib rary ’s collection of O riental m anuscripts according to the latest philological m ethods. The individual volumes in the new catalogue series endeavour to live up to this stan d ard , each being w ritten by experts in the respective branches of philology. The catalogue was planned on the lines laid down by an editorial committee established u n d er the chairm anship of the late

Professor Kaare Grønbech.

In the autum n 1950 prelim inary discussions took place between Svend Dahl, at that tim e N ational L ibrarian, who inspired this w ork, Professor Kaare Grøn

bech, who was attached to the library for the special purpose of co-ordinating the catalogue and Leo B uschardt, H ead of the O riental D epartm ent and responsible for O riental m anuscripts. The actual w ork originally started in the autum n 1952 for a three-year period, later extended and financially supported by the Rask- Ørsted Foundation. The D anish Governm ent supported printing and further cataloguing.

A special committee was set up for the purpose of m anaging this — by Danish stan d ard - large project, and the m em bers were the following:

Prof. Dr. Kaare Grønbech, C hairm an; Prof. Kaj B arr; Prof. Dr. H ans H endrik- sen; Palle B irkelund — who the sam e year succeeded Svend Dahl as National L ib rarian ; Dr. Rafael E delm ann, H ead of the H ebrew D epartm ent and Leo

Buschardt, H ead of the O riental D epartm ent, as Secretary. Prof. Dr. Frede
