The Programme committee invites the submission of proposals for papers by all scholars interested in the history of universities exploring any period from the Middle Ages to the Present. Comparative perspec- tives are encouraged. The colloquium will comprise three half-day meetings. The time allocated for each paper will be twenty minutes.

Further information will be available on Internet (address see below) from 15 October 1998 onwards.

Proposals for papers must be received by the Programme committee by 1 June 1999 and a brief résumé (not more than 500 words) by 1 De- cember 1999. The committee will announce the definitive programme on 15 January 2000.

THIRD INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS OF MARITIME HISTORY

3-5 August 2000

The International Maritime Economic History Association hereby issues a call for papers for the Third International Congress of Mari- time History, to be held Esbjerg, Denmark, 3-5 August 2000.

The Organizing Committee is anxious that all relevant strains of mari- time history be represented. To facilitate this, it has decided that the

backbone of the programme will consist of parallel sessions concen- trating on chronological, regional and thematic topics. Optiomally, it would like these to be organized in collaboration with existing scholar- ly associations or networks. Therefore, the Organizing Committee at this time would like to solicit proposals from groups or individuals inter- ested in organizing a session or who would like to suggest a topic or theme for inclusion in the programme. BRIEF proposals of about 500 words, indicating the central theme(s) to be explored and the main sources and methods to be employed, along with a one-page curriculum vitae of the participant(s), should be sent by 31 March 1999 to:

Participants in Esbjerg are expected to give first rights-of-refusal to the Association’s journal, the International Journal of Maritime History.

The Organizing Committee will also give maritime historians who do not wish to organize a session an opportunity to present a paper in opens sessions.
