T h e a s s u m p t i o n t h a t l o g i c i s o f o n l y l i m i t e d e x i s t e n t i a l s i g n i f i ­ c a n c e i s r e l a t i v e l y u n c o n t r o v e r s i a l , a n d B e r t u n g i s c o r r e c t i n t h a t w h a t i s m o s t i m p o r t a n t , o n K i e r k e g a a r d ’ s v i e w , l i e s b e y o n d t h e d o m a i n o f l o g i c i n t h e s t r i c t e s t s e n s e . U n f o r t u n a t e l y , h o w e v e r , t h e r e a d e r i s n o t g i v e n a c l e a r i m p r e s s i o n o f w h y t h i s i s s o a c c o r d i n g t o K i e r k e g a a r d . I t e v e n a p ­ p e a r s , i n p l a c e s , t h a t K i e r k e g a a r d i s i r r a t i o n a l l y a t t a c h e d t o c o n t r a d i c t i o n a n d p a r a d o x .

T h i s b e c o m e s p a r t i c u l a r l y a p p a r e n t i n B e r t u n g ’ s e f f o r t s t o c o m p a r e t h e v i e w s o f H e g e l a n d K i e r k e g a a r d . B e r t u n g a r g u e s , f o r e x a m p l e , t h a t K i e r k e g a a r d r e j e c t s t h e H e g e l i a n d o c t r i n e o f t h e m e d i a t i o n o f o p p o s i t e s b e c a u s e h e „ w a n t s t o p r e s e r v e l o g i c a l c o n t r a d i c t i o n s a n d p a r a d o x e s “ ( p . 1 2 8 ) . B u t w h y d o e s h e w a n t t o p r e s e r v e c o n t r a d i c t i o n s a n d p a r a d o x e s ?

B e r t u n g a r g u e s t h a t t h e u l t i m a t e i d e n t i f i c a t i o n o f t h e h u m a n a n d t h e d i v i n e i n H e g e l ’ s t h o u g h t i s o b j e c t i o n a b l e t o K i e r k e g a a r d b e c a u s e s u c h a n i d e n t i f i c a t i o n w o u l d m e a n t h a t t h e r e w a s „ n o t h i n g p a r a d o x i c a l i n m a i n t a i n i n g t h a t G o d h a d e x i s t e d i n t i m e a n d t h u s n o f o u n d a t i o n f o r b e l i e f i n t h e e m i n e n t s e n s e “ ( p . 1 3 7 ) . B u t w h y h a n g o n t o t h e p a r a d o x i ­ c a l f o r i t s o w n s a k e ? T h e p o i n t i s n o t t h a t t h e i d e n t i f i c a t i o n o f t h e h u ­ m a n a n d t h e d i v i n e i s u n d e s i r a b l e b e c a u s e i t m i t i g a t e s , o r d i s s o l v e s , p a r a ­ d o x ( t h i s i s , i n f a c t , d e s i r e a b l e w h e n e v e r p o s s i b l e ) , b u t t h a t , f r o m t h e p e r s p e c t i v e o f C h r i s t i a n i t y , i t i s b l a s p h e m o u s .

B e r t u n g o b s e r v e s t h a t r e a l i t y , a c c o r d i n g t o K i e r k e g a a r d , c a n b e a s y s t e m f o r G o d , b u t i t c a n n o t b e a s y s t e m f o r a n y e x i s t i n g i n d i v i d u a l . T h e r e l e v a n c e o f l o g i c t o e x i s t e n c e i s n o t , h o w e v e r , l i m i t e d a p r i o r i . I t i s l i m i t e d a s a r e s u l t o f t h e f a c t t h a t s i n s e p a r a t e s h u m a n b e i n g s f r o m t h e e t e r n a l . K i e r k e g a a r d ’ s p r e d i l e c t i o n f o r p r e s e r v i n g p a r a d o x i s n o t a p e r s o n a l i d i o s y n c r a s y a s B e r t u n g s o m e t i m e s h a s i t a p p e a r . I t i s t h e r e s u l t o f K i e r k e g a a r d ’s a c c e p t a n c e o f t h e b a s i c C h r i s t i a n d o c t r i n e o f s i n a n d t h u s p a r t o f a c o h e r e n t C h r i s t i a n W e l t a n s c h a u u n g .

T h e p r i m a r y d i f f i c u l t y w i t h B e r t u n g ’s b o o k i s t h a t i t d o e s n o t t r e a t i n s u f f i c i e n t d e t a i l a n y o f t h e m a n y i n t e r e s t i n g i s s u e s i t r a i s e s .
