8. Conclusions
8.3. Future work
There are also multiple other contributions to the company that goes beyond this dissertation work. These concern insights in regards of trends in high-‐end homes, new collaboration partners introduced through expert interviews and so fourth.
The design experiments have also led to some contributions, though not being directly transformed into future products in the company. The connected experience demonstrates that connecting through music has great potentials, since it can provide a strong feeling of connection if integrated into the sound system and if the system can attract attention when remotely used to support serendipity. A specific outcome from the research is realized through a patent concerning the scale of connecting remotely.
The study furthermore points towards the implications of a design space for slow technology in the home, where the experience is perceived as poetic and sensuous.
I also wish to point towards the importance of bringing magical experiences to the homes.
The company has an incredible expertise in mechanical movement in products that have led to an experience of magic when experiencing this. The big challenge now is to translate this into the digital era.
The contributions towards industry beyond Bang & Olufsen also concern the above-‐
mentioned contributions in regards of luxury companies and home audio systems. But the main contribution is found in the taxonomy of homing interactions. The dissertation provides a better understanding of mobility through the mapping of homing tactics that are then applicable in the design process when the respective companies want to address mobility in relation to their designs. The application of Homing Interactions will be interesting to see applied towards different kinds of products and services.
8.3. Future work
There are two areas that I would like to pursue with further research: One is the area of the tactics, in particular further development of the Artifacting tactic was only identified in the very late part of the process, as well as further explorations of the Homing
Interactions beyond Connecting. The other area concerns a potential in developing the term eccentric interaction, which is inspired by designing for the wealthy.
This dissertation treats the Connecting Interaction through design experiments. It would be interesting to try designing for the other Homing Interactions, to learn more about them as well as experience the outcome for the different interactions. Further research can uncover if all homing interactions are suitable for being supported through interaction design or if there are areas in this field that are best supported by other means.
The Artifacting tactic did not become clear until the late in this dissertation work, as we have been working around the Outboxing tactic instead. I would like to further discover how people perform the Artifacting tactic and develop concepts that meet this tactic through interactive artifacts that support a home feeling. The literature about nomadic possessions and theorizing artifacts ethnographically (Henare, Wastell, & Holbraad, 2006) represents a new turn in ethnographical research that would be very interesting to bring together with possession theories (R. W. Belk, 1988) as well as developing design and prototypes towards Artifacting Interactions.
The second theme that I would like to pursue if the research were to continue lies in the area of Eccentric Interaction, which is an interaction ideal emphasizing the staging of homes and people through the way they interact with technology. The background for the interaction paradigm is rolled out in the paper:
Published as: Lynggaard, A. B., Petersen, M. G. & Hepworth, S. de J., I had a Dream and I Built it” -Power and Self-Staging in Ubiquitous High-End Homes, CHI 2012, ACM digital Library
It highlights how people look and feel when they interact with technology in the eyes of themselves and the people surrounding them. Eccentric Interaction views interaction in a social and physical context where the people around the user become spectators that should be impressed. It is a matter of living out your dreams and passions. Eccentric interaction involves designing technologies that enable people to exercise their passions, and to express themselves through the expression while interacting with technology. The
products at Bang & Olufsen appeal to us through the heuristics of what is defined as BeoMagic (Hepworth, 2007; Lynggaard & Mortensen, 2012) and this ideal has potentials for further exploration that can be applied more generally than towards the marginal of the wealthy.
