21 APPENDIX part II – Tracking elaboration

21.1 Mobile broadband

Every ten years a new broadband technology rises to the surface, in 1980 – 1990 1G (analog), 1991-2000 2G (digital), 2001-2010 3G (multi-media support) and in 2011 4G LTE reached our market (Wikipedia, A). At the moment 4G LTE is the “new” coin term for data streaming. Many telecommunication companies like 3.dk (Danish), uses the 4G LTE as an add-on to its existing 3G net for the purpose of streaming large amount of data, but telecommunication provider will still use 3G, for smaller data consumption. (3.dk, 2013, A).

The amount of broadband traffic available to our society and charge of usage determines customers amount-access for usage. We have raised the issue several times about video data being to tough to handle and that this might have an overall effect on society’s user pattern of video – what if we assume that there would be infinity broadband, free of roaming charges? It would then become argumentative that the choice of usage for photo and video would be highly irrelevant since both choices could be handled instantly, the size of a photo or video wouldn’t matter because the time to distribute it would be close to zero. Drawing upon the extreme example it is clear why there is a difference in usage of photo/video, but again is our broadband speed and data amount technology is strong evolution.

QM could not have set any ground at all if it was released two years ago due to the fact that 3G net would not be quite sufficient enough for execute photo and video seamlessly, but with 4G LTE established and well functioned Qwiki could not have picked a better time to release its core product.

21.2 App programming language

The average app developer today have two (we won’t address Windows Store) choices when choosing an app platform; there is Android which is mostly coded in Java SE and Apples iOS platform which is often coded in Objective-C; many developers tend to specialize themselves with one platform (Techtips-salon, 2013, A). The benefit from programming towards the iOS platform is that it is the same standards, functions, size, component use from each generation, with only iPhone5 being the first generation to enlarging the screen, whereas Android consist an huge variety of mobile producers with different scaling which means more testing and securing the right product before release.

The Android market is strongly established and is a standard app platform for Smartphone’s outside Apple (and Windows Store). If Qwiki want to develop a strong social media platform, where friend can

137 share content with each other they will need to build this bridge between platforms eventually.

21.3 Tablet industry

The acknowledgement of the tablet industry is well known already from our market industry section analysis part I, but due to the reason of what innovative phenomena to track, tablets are quite essential.

Almost every smartphone app gets developed on tablets as well, in a different shaping of course. Tablets have already become a commodity in our society and this will only increase in the future which gives the reason that Qwiki can’t neglect the tablet industry, as another revenue stream contribution.

21.4 Speech recognition

The variety of call-command devices had a huge burst around 2000, from call-commands in mobile-dial-command, in-car-change-song, in-house-commands for lights, carport opener, radio/sound systems etc. and everyone in our society who owned or had incorporated it wanted to believe it was the best device ever, but it never really worked properly (Baker, J. M., 2010). Then the voice recognition company called Siri came in 2007 and in 2010 bought by Apple (Techcrunch, 2013, C), and new technology that finally had the edge to actually recognize our voices, implemented into iPhone4S and iPhone5. It had a huge hype but got fast abundance from all the irritating answers, and as much as users found it funny it was not functional, and did not make the daily life go easier.

Siri have started to unbundle the possibilities in speech recognition and when the refinement comes in the core of the technology it will have great impact not only have society will use their smartphone’s and tablets but every devices.

Qwiki has huge opportunities in the area of recognition-reading, one of the simple possibilities to adopt could be the idea as Evernote (Techcrunch, 2013, D) (business card sharing app) have made for sharing, by standing near others it has a “hello connect” feature that sends out a sound other Smartphone’s pick up, and them stores the ‘senders’ data on their Smartphone’s, Qwiki could easily imbed this feature for personal sharing of QM instantly.

In correlation to this, app’s already exists with the possibility of voice-activated-camera (Apple, 2013, A) such feature could ease the whole purpose of using QM, because since stream are automated generated a voice-activation feature could simplify everything even more.

138 21.5 Augmented reality

The perception of augmented reality can be understood as a view of our physical real-world where elements of this environment is incorporated/augmented into a computer generated understanding, like sound, video, graphics or GPS data (Wikipedia, 2013, B).

But what often is key in augmented reality is to link the physical and virtual world instantly at the same time, a concept that is mostly seen in the app industry for app games.

We have already mentioned the idea of utilizing QM for Siri as a features, but with augmented reality other possibilities can capture whole new market ideas. Qwiki could with the use of visualized recognition from the in-built camera retrieve information data about the recognition-item at hand and morph this information into a QR (bringing QR back into play) about the content/item the camera have spotted; example, milk, chocolate, cow, sheep etc. But this speaks to the technology of visualized recognition/identification.

21.6 GPS-positioning / location aware

I the beginning GPS-positioning was mostly a commodity for car-navigation, but ever since the release of Smartphone’s location awareness have become a needed function, our social surrounding and us self want to know/state where we are all the time.

In the past when we went somewhere, vacation, restaurants, etc. we took photos and put a big title above stating where they were. Today we have Facebook – places, Friend finder, photo-place-tagging etc. the possibility for acknowledging your location awareness is everywhere on our smartphone’s.

But app developers are more and more shaping the understanding of location awareness in ways that instead of acknowledging the positioning of the Smartphone, this positioning is used to establish a baseline of it surroundings; a bit like the Video app ‘Clinch.no’ that drags video content from nearby Smartphone’s.

Qwiki’s possibilities for location awareness could likely be within the ways of shaping the technology around QM, to give it the properly value.

21.7 Cloud solutions

The concept of clouding is smart in the sense the customers wouldn’t to focus on storage, security, software, maintenance etc. everything is done by the cloud provider (Wikipedia 2013, C), this is key for cloud solutions, then theirs public-, community-, hybrid- and private-clouds all with various contribution. At first cloud enabled revolutionary possibilities for companies to outsource is data

139 storage, but like every evolution the cloud solutions have been shaped in other way, like Netflix and Spotify where content simple is a streaming provider; this doesn’t change the fact they hold the cloud for all its content. The same goes for Instragram, Viddy, Socialcam etc. when pictures/video is first uploaded the content is storage within their servers and they’ll keep record of it all.

It is highly likely Qwiki’s platform will do the same, since it is the only way.

Can Qwiki become more than just a storage cloud? – Dropbox.com was founded in 2007 as a free cloud storage facility (Dropbox, 2013, A) it revolutionized the public storage understanding and made the need for USB devices indifferent. Dropbox won its user because of the personal ‘Dropbox folder’

users could have on their own desktop which automatically synchronized with saved-changes we had made on other desktops of others from shared-folders had made, it was like having an in-plugged USB device instantly.

From the evolvement of QM’s platform Qwiki could establish accessibility through cloud-access with synchronization between app and web, let users Qwiki users export their content to a private folder like Dropbox like a desktop solution, Qwiki would then enable its platform for a whole new medium making the overall Qwiki experience work ever better for the user. With this, they would break the traditional app perception of exportation, and only in-platform content, it would make them a first-mover in the app industry of exporting content out of platforms, but the technology phenomenon is already existing on web-solutions.

21.8 Activity streams

In 2006 Facebook release it New feed concept so that user could see what their friends were up to, it was a personalized data tracking solution that later got coined as Activity streams (Techcrunch, 2013, E). Today personalized data storage of customers purchasing or none purchasing quite normal, our every moves gets tracked through various sites on the web, Amazon.com knows what se looked at last time you entered their site, Google can show results that would be most common to your interests etc.

QM will also properly conduct some sort of activity stream from the Qwiki’s we make, by data stamping them, so that the stream will get built over time. But Qwiki should try to figure out how to use the phenomenon behind activity stream to a beneficial purpose. In the app industry the phenomenon isn’t quite there yet, since no really signs have been shown.

140 Thou it would be quite easy for Qwiki to develop a sharing stream with friends on its platform that would work like Facebook’s new feed solution, this way users can see the latest QM from friends and/or followers like blogger-subscription/news QM-subscription etc.

The data allocation of activity stream will only be more and more incorporated into our society with time, it all depends when to jump on.
