Introduction: Continuous focus on professional development is important in an ever-changing and competitive world where the demands of high analytical quality and productivity are the same despite high speed and rapid changes in the laboratory field. Scientifically confident, proactive and highly educated biomedical laboratory scientists (BLS) are therefore needed to predict, analyze and react on the global changes in order to create innovative laboratory and management solutions.

Material and methods: To address some of these demands, the Programme of Biomedical Laboratory Science has developed important international partnerships with research- and clinical hospital departments that offers unique training possibilities to skilled BLS-students. Continuous build-up of trust, respect and an atmosphere of innovation between the host, the student and KP as the sending institution have been crucial factors to make the cooperation blossom and evolve further.

Results: Our experience is that the opportunity of an international traineeship is a strong motivational factor for BLS students to make an extra effort during their education. This enables some of them to become active scientific co-partners in e.g. the world class diabetes El-Osta research group in epigenetics at Monash University, Australia. The highly respected Professor Sam El-Osta became honorary associate at University College of Copenhagen in April 2019. The cooperation has shown such profound quality in the education of BLS-students that Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen now is part of the joint venture. Very importantly, this

“prototype model” have inspired more Danish clinical hospital departments to cooperate on BLS-education in international partnerships.

Conclusions: The unique opportunities for BLS-students to interact professionally in high standard international laboratories are essential in the recruitment and preparation of new innovative generations of BLS’s.

Furthermore, it develops, stimulates and nourishes skills like curiosity, independency and resilience, and most importantly gives powerful professional courage to interact in the academic research environments. This is off course beyond traditional skills like language, tolerance, interprofessional competences and broad mindedness.
