INTERNSHIP AT THE DANISH INSTITUTE FOR HUMAN RIGHTS RULE OF LAW DEPARTMENT

The Danish Institute for Human Rights is looking for an intern for the Rule of Law Department from June to December 2014.

The Rule of Law Department seeks to strengthen the rule of law internationally by working with governmental human rights focal points such as human rights ministries and ministries of justice as well as national human rights institutions. The Institute also works on strengthening access to justice and the implementation of human rights by justice actors such as police, prosecutors, judges, lawyers and informal justice providers.

The Department works with projects and partners in the Middle East and North Africa (Libya, Yemen and Tunisia), Southern Africa (Zambia and Zimbabwe), West Africa (Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger) and Asia (China and Myanmar).

INTERNSHIP

In order to further develop the methods used in the field, the Department will in 2014 analyse the mandate, roles and responsibilities’ of national human rights actors. This analysis will be based on theory as well as practical experiences from projects in the field. The Department will also work on documenting more than ten years of experience in the area of police and human rights with a focus on human rights training and

criminal procedural guarantees.

As an intern in the Department you will primarily assist the staff members who are responsible for the above mentioned analyses by carrying out research, identifying and reading relevant material (theory and relevant projects carried out by the Institute) and drafting various background papers in English. Furthermore, you will have some

administrative tasks in connection with departmental work.

QUALIFICATIONS

We are looking for a student with a background in Political Science, History, Sociology or Law and with an interest in philosophy and history of human rights and economic and social justice with a human rights perspective. Knowledge of the responsibility and functioning of state institutions in implementing human rights is an advantage. Native or fluent English is required. Several of the Institutes projects are anchored in Francophone countries; it is therefore considered an advantage if you can read and understand

French.

It is a prerequisite for the internship that you are enrolled in a university programme for the duration of the internship.

Working hours are 37 hours weekly (full-time). It is also possible to negotiate a flexible internship arrangement with liberties in terms of location of the workplace and working hours.
