Editorial

Kierkegaardiana has become a well-established and elegant lady in her mid-fourties. In 1955 when she first entered the international scene, Søren Kierkegaard’s name was already known the world over, and his works had been translated into numerous languages. But even if interest in Kierkegaard’s works and thought was already growing, Kierkegaard researchers lacked an international periodical which could serve as a fo

rum for discussion and for the review of literature and translations. This need resulted in the birth of the first volume of Kierkegaardiana. Since then she has emerged — almost regularly — every other year, pregnant with scholarly articles, changing her looks slightly when fashion and her own self-conception required it.

Twenty volumes have now seen the light of the day. This present volume celebrates its predecessors with an index of all previously pub

lished articles and reviews. Tonny Aagaard Olesen has assembled this in

dex which opens with a short sketch of the history of Kierkegaardiana.

This tribute to the former volumes is due first and foremost to the fact that the Danish Kierkegaard Society had its 50th anniversary in May 1998. On that occasion, the Society introduced a jubilee publication in Danish, Studier i Stadier, which included a section treating ‘the theory of stages,’ a section reviewing the foundation of both the Kierkegaard Soci

ety and Kierkegaardiana, and a concluding section consisting of reviews.

In this volume of Kierkegaardiana, we would like to initiate non-Danish readers into the section that concerns Kierkegaardiana.

This tribute to the earlier volumes of Kierekgaardiana naturally in

cludes a tribute to her former editorial board. In the editorial remarks in vol. 20, the previous editors stepped down, and welcomed us as the new board. In return, we would like to express our gratitude to Joakim Garff, Arne Grøn, Eberhard Harbsmeier, Bruce H. Kirmmse, and Søren Bruun for their editorial work, and for entrusting this beautiful, intelligent lady to our care. Her essential nature underwent development over the years, and became even more refined during the epoch of the former editorial board — we wish to change nothing in this respect. We still want her to be known for her quality, and therefore we wish to continue to publish

scholarly articles from the many fields of international Kierkegaard re

search.

In order to comply more completely with the increasing interest in Kierkegaard, including the interest in Spanish-speaking parts of the world, Kierkegaardiana vol. 21 now invites the submission of articles in Spanish. Furthermore, since Søren Kierkegaard was a Danish thinker, and thus has many Danish readers and interpreters as well as many for

eign readers who understand his mother-tongue, we will also allow Danish articles to be published, beginning with Bo Kampmann Walter’s article in this volume. From this time forth, submissions will be accepted in five different languages: English, German, French, Spanish and Dan

ish. We will also continue the tradition of publishing reviews of recent Kierkegaard literature and translations. This particular volume has rela

tively few reviews due to the space used for the index, and though we expect the number to be greater in future volumes, fewer reviews will be included than in previous years since we aim to publish Kierkegaard

iana annually. As a new policy, all reviews - regardless the language of the book being reviewed — will be in English.

Aage Jørgensen has most kindly agreed to continue to assemble a Kierkegaard bibliography for Kierkegaardiana. In the next volume, num

ber 22, a bibliography for years 1999-2000 will be included. We wel

come supplemental information, suggestions, and corrections concern

ing scholarly works and articles on Kierkegaard. Please send such infor

mation and, if possible, re-prints, to: Aage Jørgensen, Bakkelodden 2, DK-8320 Mårslet, Denmark.

Correspondence, including articles to be submitted to Kierkegaard

iana, should be addressed to Pia Søltoft, The Søren Kierkegaard R e

search Center, Store Kannikestræde 15, D K -1169, Copenhagen K, Den

mark. Email address: ps@sk.ku.dk

Note that the deadline for volume 22 will be March 1, 2001, and that our guidlines must be followed. You will find these guidelines in the back of this volume.

And last but not least, we hope you will enjoy and benefit from the diversity of the nine articles in the present volume.
