Acknowledgements

The Congress Organizers want to express their gratitude to the members of the Committee of Patronage (see p. 7) and to all other persons and institutions who helped us, most particularly to the following:

Mr. Erik Ellegaard Frederiksen, I.D.D., who de

signed the congress letterhead and all other printed matter connected with the Congress, and Mr. Erik A. Langkjær who supervised the English translation of the various Congress texts. They never wavered in their enthusiasm despite the often unreasonable deadlines and inconvenient working hours, always yielding their generous best.

M. Roger Harmignies, secretary-general of the 11 th Congress, in Liege 1972, and until recently secre

tary ofBureau Permanent des Congres, who from first to last guided and assisted us with untiring friendship and helpfulness.

Miss Elsebeth Lassen, of Copenhagen University, whose efficient help, so readily and charmingly proffered, was of great value.

Kjøbenhavns Handelsbank A/S, who donated the bags for the participants’ Congress material, and Taitopaino lippupaino, the Finnish flag manufacturer, in Tampere, who presented us with the 25 flags, each in its marble base, that graced our closing banquet, bags and flags being all decorated with the Congress mermaid.

For their great kindness and courtesy in admit

ting participants in the two Congress excursions free of charge, special thanks are extended to Colonel Aksel Jørgensen, Keeper of Kronborg Castle, at Elsi

nore; dr.phil. Henning Henningsen, director of Han

dels- og Søfartsmuseet at Kronborg Castle; Mr. Erik Thorsen, Warden of Roskilde Cathedral, and civil

ingeniør Ove R. Engholmer, chairman of the Roskilde Cathedral Council; museumsinspektør Ole Crumlin- Pedersen, director of Vikingeskibshallen (The Viking Ship Museum) at Roskilde; and Count KnudHolstein- Ledreborg, Ledreborg Castle.

As regards exhibitions, receptions and excur

sions, see also the Congress Programme, page 9-15.

The Congress Organizers are finally most grate

ful to Kong Frederik og Dronning Ingrids Fond til hu

manitære og kulturelle Formal, Undervisningsministeriet, Statens Humanistiske Forskningsråd, Lemvigh-Muller &

Munck A/S’s Fond and Accumulator-Fabriken A/S (Lyac) for their generous and very substantial con

tributions towards covering the costs of the Con

gress.

All these various forms of assistance - moral, practical, economic and otherwise - rendered by the persons and institutions mentioned above were of immeasurable help for the Congress Organizers, who want to thank everyone most sincerely for the support given and the confidence shown.

The Royal Danish Arms

O. H. M. BARON HAXTHAUSEN

In 1645 - I believe it was - the learned British author James Howell for the first time in the English language used the winged words “No news is good news”. It is my sincere hope that those of you who already are somewhat familiar with the royal

The legendaryfounder of the Danish kingdom, king Dan, as conceived about 1590, displaying the royal Danish arms: or seme of hearts gules, three crowned lions passant azure.

Danish arms will remember this and appreciate the profound wisdom of the saying when I have con

cluded my paper.

To those, for whom our royal heraldry is un

known land, I would like to say: I have tried my very best to make something complicated very sim

ple and easy. And I can assure you I am not going to tell you all about the royal arms simply because I don’t know everything.

As you may know, before heraldry we now have pre-heraldry. With this ingenious invention it is sometimes possible to make heraldry much older than it really is. Let us take an example: In an old book at the Royal Library we find an illustration which clearly proves that already the legendary king Dan of Denmark bore the Danish arms. Un

fortunately we do not know if ever, or when, king Dan lived but the book was painted and written about 1590 for the honourable Hak Ulfstand who was tutor to the young king Christian IV, and the book was used as his history book.

Another more serious example brings us to the Holy Land, to the Church of Nativity at Betlehem.

When we have passed the low entrance and got accustomed to the subdued light in this basilica we can see that most of the columns are decorated with paintings of saints. It is an exclusive selection naturally headed by the Virgin Mary with her new

born. But down the nave we find this man and near his head we can still distinguish his name: Sanct Canutus Rex Danorum - Set. Canute, king of the Danes. His left hand is resting on a shield shaped like an almond on which is a cross set with jewels.

Canute II was not a very popular king and for good reasons. He introduced the personal taxes in Denmark. Consequently he was killed at Set. Al

ban’s Church at Odense in 1086 by a crowd of peasants. Thanks to some English monks who wrote his legend and the efforts of king Eric

25

(28)

nicknamed “the ever so good” the name he left behind him was completely changed and in 1101 he was canonized as a saint by the pope.

It is the oldest painting we have of any of our kings, painted in 1130 probably by an Armenian artist. Of course it is not a portrait but I think it gives a reliable picture of what a Christian prince and saint should look like in those days. And what is more important, it gives an excellent picture of what a shield looked like.

Column in the Church of Nativity in Betlehem with a painting, from about 1130, of Canutus, Rex Danorum

(1080-86).

On the next column is his Norwegian opposite number Set. Olav who also holds a shield with a cross. But Set. Eric of Sweden is missing. He was not yet killed when the paintings were done.

Two Scandinavian saints and kings selected for the decoration of the columns at the Church of Nativity at Betlehem is to me an indication of a considerable Scandinavian participation in the early crusades.

We can get another such indication from a pic

ture probably drawn by no less than Matthew Paris. It is the waterfront of the Holy Land with Scandinavian long-ships off shore. Many of the Scandinavian crusaders went by sea around Spain to Palestine. No wonder that one of the oldest Eng

lish rolls of arms equip the king of Norway with a shield with three long-ships.

Let us now turn to real heraldry. The birth certifi

cate not only of the royal Danish arms but of heral

dry as such in Denmark is the seal of Canute VI from about 1190. It was found in the archives of Schwerin in 1879.

We can proudly establish that our lions are senior to the English ones - which are from about 1198 — but more than that, we can indirectly prove that this birth certificate must have been issued some time after the actual birth because the dukes of Liineburg which were descended from Helen, a sister to Ca

nute VI bore a coat which was derived from the royal Danish arms. This means, it is most likely that their father Valdemar the Great who reigned 1157-1182 adopted the three lions.

But why three lions? Personally I think that there might be some connection between the lions of Swabia, Denmark and England.

The emperor Frederick Barbarossa who was also duke of Swabia had the idea that all kings of Europe should come and pay homage to him. Indeed very many did - with more or less reluctance. The kings of Denmark refused at least once, but we also know that they did go twice. Maybe on such an occasion the king of Denmark was given - not the imperial eagle — but the lions of Swabia as an honour and at the same time as a sign of the king as subordinate to the emperor.

26

(29)

The oldest documentary evidence of the arms of Denmark, the seal of Canute VI (1182-1202), from about 1190.

Henry VI followed the line of Frederick Bar

barossa. When king Richard I in 1193 was released from captivity in Austria it was not directly but via the emperor. Perhaps king Richard at this occasion ended up with three lions.

This theory, however, has some weak points. One of them being that we don’t know if the Swabian lions really are that old.

Between the lions there are a great number of small figures. I shall leave it to you to interpret them as hearts or water-lily leaves, but we have reason to believe that they were originally meant to be water

lily leaves.

In the description of the actual royal coat of arms they are water-lily leaves. And in 1819 the number of leaves - or at that time hearts - was fixed at nine.

The lions were not originally crowned, but from Valdemar II - the brother and successor to Canute VI - and onwards they usually are crowned.

Until the Second World War the Danish lions were also the arms of Estonia and later Tallinn. It is a souvenir from the 13 th and 14th century when Denmark ruled Estonia.

Royal Danish Arms The frontparts of the three lions can be seen in the seal of Ribe town. It looks as if they are jumping from one of the towers of the cathedral. The seal is dated to the late 13th century. Denmark had no capital at that time but Ribe was often preferred as residence for the king.

In another contemporary seal we have the three lions at their full length on a shield at the gate

house. Most of the year this was just a ghost-town but for short periods it was ready to burst with people and fish. It was the herring market at Skanør in Scania (Skåne). It was of strategic importance situated between the North and the Baltic. It needed royal protection against the Hanseatic League and got it because the king held consider

able revenues from the market. Naturally the seal includes the three lions and two herrings.

Occasionally we see the royal arms with crest and helmet. The crest is two horns coated with ermine and dressed up with a number of peacock fans.

Queen Margrethe I was the last ruler of the old dynasty of the Valdemars. Long before she died in 1412 she had her sister’s grandchild Erik of Pomerania elected king of Denmark, Norway and Sweden - the three kingdoms which she had man

aged to unite in 1397 at Kalmar. But as long as she lived she continued to be in power. During this period she used a seal displaying three coronets -

A modern version of the coat-of-arms of the city of Ribe, on the west coast of Jutland, half the lions of the realm, half Ribe Cathedral. Probably the king and the bishop were joint masters of the town.

dinavian countries.

Erik of Pomerania is the first king of Denmark to combine several coats of arms on one shield. The main shield is divided into four by a cross. This is the cross of the Danish flag, the Dannebrog, which also is in the first quarter held in the claws of the three Danish lions.

The second quarter with the three coronets is in all probability the symbol of the union, though some experts maintain they are the coronets which were adopted by king Albrecht of Sweden about 1364 as a supplement to the lion in the third quar

ter, the Folkunge lion.

The griffin which strangely enough turns its tail to the other charges represents king Erik’s title as duke of Pomerania while the inescutcheon with the lion holding the hatchet or axe of Set. Olav repres

ents Norway. The reason why Norway is in the center may be because Erik was first recognized as king in Norway.

In 1448 count Christian of Oldenburg was elected king of Denmark, in 1449 king of Norway, in 1457 king of Sweden and in 1460 he was elected duke of Slesvig and count of Holstein.
